I am a Griffin
A farewell from the editor
Jonny Bonner
Issue date: 4/28/09 Section: Forum
Griffins, with the body of a lion and head and wings of an eagle, are mythically renown for their courage, boldness, intelligence and strength. Christians viewed the terrestrial beast and aerial bird as a symbol of Jesus, both human and divine-hence their frequent addition to churches. The Republic of Genoa, a major seafaring power in the Middle Ages, sported them on their coat of arms.
Griffins frequently guarded treasure and hold a place in major literary works including "Alexander the Great" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Their feathers were rumored to cure blindness in medieval Europe.
I am a Griffin. A Westminster Griffin.
Thank you, Westminster College, for allowing me access to the treasures that I've found within your walls. Thank you for the courage, boldness, intelligence and strength. As I graduate this spring and look toward the future, I will hold this school paramount to my formation as a lifelong student, citizen and professional, as well as the various hats I may wear throughout life.
My parents were married on the Westminster campus. I grew up hundreds of miles away in Boise after their divorce. I wasn't aware of my connection until recently; however, here I am, cultivating my passion for writing and growing immensely. Today, Westminster has helped my work reach a national audience and opened opportunities from coast to coast. Funny how life works.
As I depart our community for Georgetown and Washington, D.C., I wish my peers and the future alumni all the happiness and successes one may enjoy. The Forum will be passed to the hands of the very experienced and tirelessly-working Krista Smith, incoming editor-in-chief, and her hard-working staff, of whom I have no question will keep us all interested, engaged and informed.
We've adjusted the publication to the growing trend of convergence in print and electronic media and made The Forum accessible for all to read, anytime and anywhere with an Internet connection, at www.westminsterforum.net. Campus racks will continue to be filled biweekly, as well. Your comments and suggestions are always welcomed and encouraged via email or through the new site.
As I embark on a new journey, a place will always be reserved in my heart for this magnificent institution. I anticipate life's paths will bring me back toward campus, though, to view the great strides that faculty, staff and alumni will continue to make in furthering our unique college.
Thank you, Westminster.
